So, what is potassium hydrogen sulphite?
Potassium hydrogen sulphite is a food additive commonly used as a preservative due to its ability to inhibit the growth of microorganisms. It is also known as potassium bisulphite and has a chemical formula of KHSO3. This white powder is soluble in water and acidic solutions, making it an ideal choice for products such as wine, beer, and dried fruits where pH plays a critical role in spoilage prevention. However, it can cause allergic reactions in some individuals and should be avoided by those with sensitivity to sulfites.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
