So, what is potassium nitrate?
Potassium nitrate, also known as saltpeter, is a chemical compound commonly used as a food preservative and additive. It is a white, crystalline powder with a slightly salty and bitter taste. Potassium nitrate is used in a variety of food products such as cured meats, cheese, and canned vegetables to inhibit the growth of bacteria and extend their shelf life. Additionally, it is used in the production of fireworks and fertilizers. However, excessive consumption of potassium nitrate can have negative health effects, such as gastrointestinal discomfort and the formation of methemoglobinemia, a type of blood disorder.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
