So, what is salpetre?
Saltpeter, also known as potassium nitrate, is a naturally occurring mineral compound that has been used for centuries as a food preservative and flavor enhancer. It is often used in the curing of meat and fish to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and to extend shelf life. In addition to its preservative properties, saltpeter is also used as a key ingredient in the production of fireworks and gunpowder. However, due to its potential health risks when consumed in large quantities, saltpeter is regulated by many countries and is typically only used in small amounts in food processing.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
