So, what is semi sweet chocolate?
Semi-sweet chocolate is a form of dark chocolate containing at least 35 percent cocoa solids, typically blended with cocoa butter and sugar. It is made by fermenting, drying, roasting, and grinding cacao beans into cocoa liquor, which is then refined and conched with additional fat and sweeteners. Food manufacturers commonly use semi-sweet chocolate in baking chips, coated snacks, cookies, granola bars, and packaged desserts.
This ingredient is categorized as possibly vegan because its formulation varies between brands. Traditional semi-sweet chocolate relies primarily on plant-derived ingredients like cacao and cocoa butter, but many commercial versions incorporate animal-derived dairy components such as milk fat, butter oil, or whey. Furthermore, the cane sugar used in the chocolate may be refined using animal bone char. Because ingredient labels usually do not detail sugar processing or always declare dairy sub-ingredients when present at low levels or within flavorings, checking for a vegan certification or contacting the manufacturer is required to confirm whether the product is entirely plant-based.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
