So, what is sodium nitrite?
Sodium nitrite is a chemical compound composed of sodium, nitrogen, and oxygen. It is commonly used as a food preservative, coloring agent, and flavor enhancer. It gives a distinctive pink color to cured meats, such as bacon, ham, and hot dogs, and also helps to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria, such as botulism. However, excessive consumption of sodium nitrite has been linked to an increased risk of certain types of cancer, making it a controversial ingredient in the food industry.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
