So, what is sorbate de potassium e202?
"Sorbate de potassium e202" is French for potassium sorbate, a widely used food preservative identified by the European additive code E202. While sorbic acid was originally discovered in the berries of the rowan tree, commercial potassium sorbate is manufactured synthetically. It is produced by neutralizing synthetic sorbic acid with potassium hydroxide, a mineral-derived compound.
Food manufacturers add this compound to inhibit the growth of mold, yeast, and fungi, which helps extend product shelf life. It commonly appears on labels for dried fruits, baked goods, fruit juices, soft drinks, jams, syrups, and fermented beverages like wine.
Potassium sorbate receives a vegan verdict because its commercial production relies entirely on chemical synthesis from petroleum derivatives and minerals. No animal tissues, animal secretions, or animal-derived processing aids are used during its manufacturing process. Consequently, ingredients listed as sorbate de potassium e202 are safe for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
