So, what is soy sauce powder?
Soy sauce powder is a dehydrated seasoning made by spray-drying liquid soy sauce into a fine, free-flowing powder. It is produced from liquid soy sauce, which is made by fermenting a mixture of soybeans, cracked wheat, water, and salt using microbial cultures like Aspergillus molds. To create the powder, manufacturers typically mix the liquid with a carbohydrate carrier, such as maltodextrin or cornstarch, and spray the mixture into a heated chamber to evaporate the water. This ingredient is commonly found in snack foods such as flavored potato chips and crackers, instant soup bases, dry marinades, ramen seasoning packets, and powdered gravies.
Soy sauce powder is classified as vegan because its components are entirely of plant, microbial, and mineral origin. The base ingredients of soybeans, wheat, and salt contain no animal inputs, and the fermentation process relies solely on fungal and bacterial cultures. Furthermore, the carriers and anti-caking agents added during the dehydration process are derived from plant starches or synthetic mineral sources. Because no animal tissues, dairy, or animal-derived processing aids are involved in standard manufacturing, the ingredient is suitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
