Vitamina B9, also known as folic acid or folate, is a water-soluble B-vitamin essential for numerous biological functions, including the formation of DNA and RNA, red blood cell production, and proper nervous system development. Folate is particularly important for pregnant women, as it helps prevent birth defects and supports healthy fetal growth. Additionally, vitamin B9 is involved in the metabolism of homocysteine, an amino acid associated with increased risk of heart disease. Good dietary sources of vitamin B9 include leafy green vegetables, legumes, and fortified cereals.
