So, what is vitis vinifera?
Vitis vinifera is the Latin botanical name for the common grape vine, the plant species cultivated to produce standard table grapes and wine grapes. On ingredient labels, this botanical name indicates substances derived directly from the fruit, seeds, skin, or leaves of the grape plant. Manufacturers obtain these materials through mechanical pressing, as with grape seed oil, or through drying and water-based or solvent extractions to yield concentrated powders and liquids. It is commonly found in functional foods, beverages, dietary supplements, and various personal care products.
This ingredient receives a vegan verdict because it is entirely of plant origin. Whether used as a seed oil, fruit extract, or coloring agent, vitis vinifera comes strictly from botanical agriculture. Standard industrial extraction and refining processes for grape-derived ingredients do not require animal-derived inputs, enzymes, or processing aids. Because no animal sources or animal byproducts are involved in its harvesting or standard processing, vitis vinifera is suitable for individuals following a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
