So, what is volkamer lemon?
Volkamer lemon is a citrus fruit produced by the tree species Citrus volkameriana, believed to be a natural hybrid of the mandarin orange and the citron. Named after the German botanist Johann Christoph Volkamer, this fruit is commonly cultivated in warm, subtropical regions both for its fruit and as a resilient rootstock for grafting other commercial citrus varieties. In food production, the fruit is harvested and processed into fresh juice, puree, essential peel oil, or dried zest. It most frequently appears as an ingredient in specialty beverages, citrus-based marinades, salad dressings, and fruit preserves.
Volkamer lemon is vegan because it is an agricultural product derived purely from plants. The typical manufacturing methods used to process the fruit into culinary juices, concentrates, or extracts rely on mechanical harvesting, cold pressing, filtration, and standard pasteurization. No animal tissues, animal byproducts, or animal-derived processing aids are used during cultivation or manufacturing. Consequently, any food product containing Volkamer lemon is suitable for individuals following a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
