So, what is alum?
Alum is a common food ingredient that is usually used as a firming agent or stabilizer in various foods. It is a white crystalline powder that can be derived from natural sources like bauxite and is usually made up of potassium or ammonium aluminum sulfate. Alum has a tart, acidic taste and is often added to pickles, cheese, and baked goods to maintain their texture and ensure they don't spoil. Its unique properties also make it a popular ingredient in the production of cosmetics, water purification, and even as a traditional remedy for canker sores and other mouth irritations.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
