So, what is butylated hydroxyanisole?
Butylated hydroxyanisole, also known as BHA, is a synthetic antioxidant commonly used in the food industry to preserve the freshness and extend the shelf life of processed foods. It is a white, waxy substance with a faint odor and a slightly bitter taste. BHA works by preventing the oxidation of fats and oils, which can cause them to become rancid and spoil. Despite concerns about its safety, BHA has been approved by regulatory agencies as a food additive and is considered generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for use in small amounts.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
