So, what is calcium oxide?
Calcium oxide, also known as quicklime, is a versatile inorganic compound commonly used as a food ingredient. It is made by heating limestone, a sedimentary rock, in a kiln to extremely high temperatures, which results in the release of carbon dioxide and the formation of calcium oxide. This fine, white powder is widely used as a food preservative, pH adjuster, and anti-caking agent, as it is highly reactive and readily reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide. Its strong alkaline properties also make it an effective ingredient in the production of baking powder and as a flavor enhancer in certain foods. However, due to its reactive nature, it must be handled with care to avoid skin and eye irritation.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
