So, what is sodium hydroxide?
Sodium hydroxide, also known as lye or caustic soda, is a highly caustic compound commonly used in the food industry as a pH adjuster, neutralizer, and leavening agent. It is a white, odorless solid with a slippery texture and can cause severe chemical burns if it comes into contact with skin or eyes. Sodium hydroxide is also used in the production of soaps, detergents, and paper, and is a key component in the manufacturing of biodiesel. Despite its hazardous properties, sodium hydroxide is a crucial ingredient in many food processing operations and is generally recognized as safe when used in accordance with good manufacturing practices.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
