So, what is catgut?
Catgut is a type of cord made from the natural fibers found in the walls of animal intestines, usually from sheep or goats. The name is derived from the fact that it was once commonly used in the production of strings for musical instruments, such as violins and guitars. Catgut is also used in surgical sutures, as it is strong and flexible. It is prepared by cleaning and soaking the intestines in water, then twisting the fibers together to create a durable cord. While catgut is not commonly used in modern music or surgery due to the availability of synthetic materials, it remains an important historical and cultural ingredient.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
