So, what is castoreum?
Castoreum is a food ingredient derived from the castor sacs of beavers, which are located near the anus. While it may sound unappetizing, castoreum has been used in food and beverages for centuries as a flavor enhancer and fragrance agent. Due to its natural properties, it is often used as a substitute for vanilla, raspberry, and strawberry flavors. Castoreum is also used in perfumes and personal care products. Despite its origin, castoreum is generally regarded as safe for consumption by regulatory bodies such as the FDA.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
