So, what is ci 19140?
CI 19140 is the Colour Index designation for tartrazine, a synthetic lemon-yellow azo dye commonly known in food production as E102 or FD&C Yellow 5. It is manufactured industrially through the chemical reaction of petroleum-derived aromatic compounds, specifically sulfanilic acid and pyrazolone derivatives. This colorant appears on ingredient labels for a wide variety of yellow, orange, and green edible goods, including carbonated beverages, confectionery, packaged baked goods, powdered drink mixes, condiments, and snack foods.
CI 19140 is vegan because it is an artificial additive created from petrochemical and mineral materials. No animal tissues, animal byproducts, or animal-derived processing aids are used during its commercial synthesis. Because its supply chain relies solely on synthetic organic chemistry rather than animal sources, CI 19140 satisfies the criteria for vegan consumption.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
