So, what is yellow 4?
Yellow 4 is a synthetic azo food dye commonly known as tartrazine, E102, or FD&C Yellow No. 5 depending on the region. It is manufactured through chemical synthesis from petroleum-derived hydrocarbons, specifically by coupling diazotized sulfanilic acid with other synthetic organic intermediates. Food and beverage processors use this coloring agent to impart a bright lemon-yellow shade to products such as soft drinks, confectionery, breakfast cereals, flavored snack chips, baked goods, and dessert mixes. It is also frequently found in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and personal care products.
Yellow 4 is considered vegan because its raw materials and chemical processes are entirely synthetic and petroleum-based. No animal tissues, animal byproducts, or animal-derived processing aids are used at any stage of its production. Because the manufacturing process relies solely on synthetic organic chemistry, the resulting dye contains no ingredients of animal origin.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
