So, what is crab meat?
Crab meat is the flesh harvested from the body, legs, or claws of crabs, which are decapod crustaceans. It is obtained by catching crabs from marine or freshwater environments, cooking them through boiling or steaming, and extracting the edible muscle tissue from the exoskeleton. The harvested meat is sold fresh, pasteurized, frozen, or canned. It commonly appears on the ingredient labels of seafood chowders, bisques, crab cakes, sushi, dips, salad dressings, and prepared frozen meals.
Crab meat is not vegan because it comes directly from animals. The ingredient consists entirely of animal tissue, and vegans avoid all food products derived from living creatures, including marine crustaceans. Buyers should also note that imitation crab meat, often labeled as surimi, is typically processed from white fish flesh and egg whites, meaning it is also an animal-derived product rather than a plant-based alternative. Real crab meat always represents animal flesh and is entirely unsuitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
