So, what is e124?
E124, commonly known as Ponceau 4R, is a synthetic red azo dye used as a food coloring agent. It is produced synthetically from petroleum-derived aromatic hydrocarbons through chemical synthesis. Food manufacturers use this additive to impart a bright crimson or strawberry-red hue to a variety of processed goods. Common products containing E124 include soft drinks, candies, dessert powders, baked goods, jams, canned fruits, and savory snack foods.
This ingredient is considered vegan because its production relies entirely on synthetic, petrochemical sources with no animal inputs. Consumers sometimes confuse Ponceau 4R with carmine or cochineal due to its alternate commercial name, Cochineal Red A. However, unlike carmine, which is extracted from scale insects, E124 is strictly an artificial chemical compound. Because no animal or insect materials or animal-derived processing aids are used to manufacture it, E124 meets vegan criteria.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
