So, what is e501?
E501 refers to potassium carbonates, a group of food additives comprising potassium carbonate and potassium hydrogen carbonate. Historically extracted by leaching plant ashes, modern food-grade E501 is produced synthetically by reacting potassium hydroxide with carbon dioxide. The potassium hydroxide itself is manufactured through the electrolysis of naturally occurring mineral salts, specifically potassium chloride mined from the earth.
In commercial food processing, E501 functions primarily as an acidity regulator, raising agent, and buffering agent. It is commonly found in baked goods, chocolate and Dutch-processed cocoa powder, traditional alkaline noodles such as ramen, wine, and carbonated beverages.
E501 is vegan because its production relies entirely on mineral resources and chemical synthesis. No animal tissues, animal derivatives, or animal-based processing aids are involved at any stage of its manufacturing process.
