It is also used in modified atmosphere packaging to displace oxygen and prevent oxidation in sealed products like potato chips, nuts, and coffee.

Manufacturers produce food-grade nitrous oxide through chemical synthesis, most commonly by heating ammonium nitrate to trigger thermal decomposition.
