So, what is ethoxyquin?
Ethoxyquin is a synthetic antioxidant and preservative used to prevent the oxidation of fats and fat-soluble vitamins. It is manufactured industrially through chemical synthesis from petroleum-derived compounds, typically produced by condensing 4-ethoxyaniline with acetone derivatives. While it is widely used in commercial animal feeds and pet foods to prevent rancidity, it can also appear on food labels for humans as a preservative in spices such as paprika and chili powder, or as a post-harvest treatment on tree fruits like pears.
Ethoxyquin receives a vegan verdict because its origin is strictly synthetic and petrochemical. The chemical intermediates required to manufacture it do not come from animal sources, and animal-derived processing aids are not used during the manufacturing process. Because no animal tissues, extracts, or byproducts are involved at any point in its production, ethoxyquin is suitable for a vegan diet.
