So, what is hydrogenated soy oil?
Hydrogenated soy oil is a commonly used food ingredient made from soybean oil that has been chemically altered to increase its shelf life and stability. The hydrogenation process involves adding hydrogen to the oil under high pressure and temperature, which transforms the liquid oil into a solid form. This results in a more stable and versatile fat that is commonly used in food manufacturing to enhance texture, flavor, and extend shelf life. However, the hydrogenation process also produces trans fats, which have been linked to increased risk of heart disease. To reduce the negative health effects, it is recommended to limit consumption of foods containing hydrogenated soy oil.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
