So, what is star aniseed?
Star aniseed is a highly aromatic and flavorful spice commonly used in Asian and Indian cuisine. It is the fruit of a small evergreen tree native to Southwest China and features a distinctive star-shaped appearance with eight points, which is where its name comes from. The flavor of star aniseed is sweet, licorice-like, and slightly spicy, making it a popular ingredient in spice blends, marinades, and soups. It also contains a compound called anethole, which is believed to have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, making it a potentially beneficial addition to some herbal remedies.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
