So, what is jedlá sůl?
Jedlá sůl is the Czech phrase for edible salt, referring to common table salt composed primarily of sodium chloride. It is a mineral ingredient obtained either by mining underground rock salt deposits or by evaporating seawater and natural brines. Following extraction, the raw salt is typically washed, dissolved, recrystallized, and dried to remove impurities.
This ingredient is found across a wide variety of grocery products, including bread, baked goods, canned vegetables, savory snacks, prepared meals, sauces, and spice blends, where it serves as a primary seasoning and preservative.
jedlá sůl is vegan because it is an inorganic mineral that contains no animal components. No animal-derived substances or animal processing aids are used during the harvesting, refining, or packing processes. Common optional additives, such as iodine compounds for nutrient fortification or anti-caking agents like silicon dioxide and sodium ferrocyanide, are produced synthetically or sourced from minerals, meaning the finished salt remains entirely free of animal inputs.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
