So, what is kryddor?
"Kryddor" is the Swedish word for "spices." Spices are aromatic substances obtained from dried plants, including seeds, fruits, roots, bark, or other botanical parts. Common examples include black pepper, paprika, cinnamon, cumin, and cardamom. These plant materials are harvested, dried, and often ground into powder or left whole to add flavor, color, or aroma to foods. The word "kryddor" appears frequently on ingredient labels in Sweden and other Nordic markets across a broad range of packaged items, such as prepared meals, soups, sauces, snack foods, plant-based alternatives, and baked goods.
This ingredient is classified as vegan because it is derived entirely from plant sources. Under food labeling regulations in Sweden and the European Union, the designation "kryddor" applies specifically to culinary spices harvested from vegetation. The term does not encompass animal-derived flavorings, dairy ingredients, or meat extracts. Because spices are composed solely of botanical matter and contain no animal products, ingredients listed under this collective name are suitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
