So, what is monkeypod?
Monkeypod is a plant-based ingredient derived from the edible fruit pods or seeds of the monkeypod tree, scientifically known as Samanea saman or Pithecellobium dulce. Native to tropical regions of Central and South America and widely grown across Southeast Asia and the Pacific islands, the tree produces large legume pods containing a sweet, sticky pulp. To prepare monkeypod for food applications, the mature pods are harvested, opened, and separated from the hard seeds, after which the pulp is consumed fresh, boiled into concentrated syrups, or dehydrated and ground into flour.
Products that list monkeypod as an ingredient include regional confectionery, traditional beverages, herbal teas, specialty baked goods, and fruit preserves. It functions primarily as a natural flavoring agent, texturizer, or sweetening element in artisanal and tropical food items.
Monkeypod is classified as vegan because it is purely of botanical origin. The fruit and its derivatives are harvested directly from trees and processed through basic mechanical methods such as peeling, drying, and milling. No animal products or animal-derived processing aids are used during its cultivation or manufacture.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
