So, what is polyquaternium-44?
Polyquaternium-44 is a synthetic quaternary ammonium copolymer composed of vinylpyrrolidone and quaternized vinylimidazole monomers. It is manufactured through industrial polymerization processes using petrochemical-derived chemical precursors. This ingredient functions primarily as an antistatic, film-forming, and conditioning agent. While polyquaternium compounds are standard additions to personal care and cosmetic formulations such as hair conditioners, shampoos, styling mousses, and body washes, they can also appear on multi-category product labels and regulatory ingredient registers.
polyquaternium-44 is vegan because it is of entirely synthetic origin. The production process relies solely on laboratory synthesis from petroleum and mineral sources, meaning that no animal tissues, animal fats, or animal-derived processing aids are involved at any stage of manufacturing. Because no animal inputs are used to create it, polyquaternium-44 is consistently free of animal sources and suitable for vegan use.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
