So, what is sal fat?
Sal fat, also known as pork fatback, is a versatile ingredient used in various cuisines worldwide. It is obtained from the layer of fat beneath the skin of the pig's back and is commonly used for rendering into lard or cutting into small pieces to add flavor and richness to dishes. Sal fat has a creamy texture and a distinct savory flavor that enhances the taste of meats, vegetables, and sauces. It is a common ingredient in traditional dishes like pâté, bacon, and sausages. Additionally, sal fat can be used as a cooking fat or as a substitute for butter or oil in baking.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
