So, what is slaked lime?
Slaked lime, also known as hydrated lime, is a powdery ingredient that's created by mixing quicklime with water. It has a slightly alkaline and bitter taste, and is commonly used in cooking to add a distinct flavor to dishes, particularly in Mexican cuisine. Beyond the kitchen, slaked lime is also used in various industries, such as construction and agriculture, due to its ability to act as a natural and economical disinfectant, soil conditioner, and pH stabilizer. However, it should be handled with care as it can cause skin irritation and burns upon contact with water.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
