So, what is sodium tetraborate?
Sodium tetraborate, commonly known as borax, is a white crystalline powder composed of sodium, boron, and oxygen. It has a wide range of applications, including as a cleaning agent, insecticide, and flame retardant. In food, it is used as a preservative and emulsifier. Though generally considered safe in small amounts, excessive ingestion can cause gastrointestinal distress and other health problems. Sodium tetraborate has been the subject of controversy due to its potential toxicity, leading some countries to ban its use in certain products.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
