So, what is sorbitole?
Sorbitol, also known as glucitol, is a sugar alcohol that occurs naturally in many fruits and vegetables. It is commonly used as a sugar substitute in foods and beverages, as it is about 60% as sweet as table sugar, yet has fewer calories and a lower glycemic index. Sorbitol is also used as a humectant in many cosmetic and pharmaceutical products, as it has the ability to attract and retain moisture. It is a versatile ingredient with a wide range of applications, and its sweet taste and low-calorie content make it an appealing choice for those looking to reduce their sugar intake. However, consuming excessive amounts of sorbitol can cause gastrointestinal distress, as it is poorly absorbed in the small intestine and can ferment in the large intestine.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
