So, what is vegetables shortening?
Vegetable shortening is a type of semi-solid fat made from vegetable oils, typically palm, soybean, or cottonseed oil. It is commonly used in baking as a substitute for butter or lard, as it has a higher melting point and provides a flakier texture to pastry crusts and pie dough. Vegetable shortening is also a popular ingredient in the production of commercially made snacks, such as crackers and cookies, due to its ability to extend the shelf life of products. While vegetable shortening may be lower in cholesterol than animal-based fats, it is still high in saturated fats and should be consumed in moderation.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
