So, what is weasel coffee?
Weasel coffee is a specialty coffee produced from coffee cherries that have been eaten, partially digested, and defecated by small mammals, specifically civets or weasels. Originating primarily in Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam and Indonesia, the production process involves collecting the animal droppings, extracting the undigested coffee seeds, and washing, drying, and roasting them. This ingredient is typically listed on the packaging of whole-bean coffees, ground coffee blends, instant coffee mixes, and occasionally specialty coffee-flavored desserts or liqueurs.
Weasel coffee is not vegan because it relies directly on the use of animals for its production. Although the coffee bean originates from a plant, the finished product cannot exist without passing through an animal digestive tract. Because the manufacturing method fundamentally requires animal ingestion and excretion, the resulting beans are classified as an animal-derived product and are not suitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
