So, what is milk ingredients?
Milk ingredients is a collective regulatory term used on food labels to refer to one or more dairy components derived from mammalian milk, usually from cows. This classification encompasses various basic dairy products, such as whole milk, skim milk, cream, butter, and milkfat. Manufacturers obtain these substances by collecting raw milk from dairy animals and processing it through pasteurization, mechanical separation, or churning. The term commonly appears on ingredient lists for packaged baked goods, confectionery, chocolates, frozen desserts, processed cheeses, prepared sauces, and snack seasonings to add fat, creaminess, and flavor.
milk ingredients is not vegan because it is derived entirely from animal sources. Because this term legally refers only to dairy secretions from mammals, it never indicates a plant-based or synthetic alternative. Any food item listing milk ingredients contains direct animal derivatives and is unsuitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
