So, what is achiote?
Achiote, also known as annatto, is a natural food coloring and spice derived from the seeds of the achiote tree. It has a deep orange-red color and a mild, slightly sweet and nutty flavor with hints of pepper and cinnamon. Achiote is widely used in Latin American and Caribbean cuisines to add both color and flavor to a variety of dishes, such as rice, stews, meats, and sauces. It's also a popular ingredient in traditional Mexican dishes like cochinita pibil and tamales. Besides its culinary uses, achiote has also been traditionally used for its medicinal properties, including its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
