So, what is colloidal silicon dioxide?
Colloidal silicon dioxide is a finely divided, engineered form of silicon dioxide used primarily as an anti-caking agent, glidant, and moisture absorber. It is produced synthetically from mineral sources, typically through the high-temperature vapor-phase hydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride or by the chemical precipitation of water glass derived from natural quartz sand. The resulting porous powder has a very high surface area and is commonly added to dry powdered food mixes, spice blends, seasonings, table salt, and dietary supplement tablets or capsules to prevent clumping and maintain free-flowing properties during packaging and storage.
Colloidal silicon dioxide is vegan because it is derived entirely from mineral and synthetic inputs. Animal tissues, animal secretions, and animal-derived processing aids play no role in the extraction of raw silica or in the chemical manufacturing of the final compound. Because no animal sources are involved at any stage of its production, colloidal silicon dioxide consistently complies with vegan dietary standards.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
