So, what is e1510?
E1510 is the European food additive code for ethanol, commonly known as ethyl alcohol. In food manufacturing, it functions as a carrier solvent for colorings and flavorings, an antimicrobial preservative, or an extraction solvent. It frequently appears on ingredient labels for vanilla extract, liquid flavor formulations, packaged pastries, confectionery, and alcoholic beverages.
This substance is produced primarily through the biological fermentation of sugars by yeast strains such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The agricultural feedstocks used for this fermentation process are entirely plant-based, including corn, wheat, molasses, sugar cane, and fruit juices. Ethanol can also be produced synthetically through the industrial hydration of ethylene, a petrochemical derivative.
E1510 is classified as vegan because its commercial production relies entirely on plant agriculture, microbial fermentation, or synthetic chemical synthesis. No animal tissues, processing aids derived from animal slaughter, or animal byproducts are used to manufacture the substance itself. As a result, food products containing E1510 are acceptable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
