So, what is e1518?

E1518 is the European additive code for triacetin, also known as glyceryl triacetate. It is a synthetic compound produced by esterifying glycerol with acetic acid or acetic anhydride. The raw materials used in this process are derived from petrochemical sources, plant oils, or microbial fermentation, yielding a clear, oily liquid through chemical synthesis.

In food production, E1518 functions as a humectant, plasticizer, and solvent carrier for concentrated flavorings. Manufacturers commonly add it to chewing gum bases, baked goods, confectionery, dried fruit, and liquid flavoring formulations to retain moisture and dissolve other ingredients.

E1518 is vegan because it originates entirely from synthetic, plant, or mineral sources. Commercial manufacturing does not utilize animal fats or byproducts to produce this additive, ensuring that it is free from animal-derived inputs.
