So, what is e307b?
E307b is the European food additive code for tocopherol-rich extract, also known commercially as mixed tocopherols concentrate. It functions as an antioxidant, helping to preserve foods by protecting dietary fats and oils from oxidation and rancidity. Manufacturers produce E307b by refining and vacuum-distilling the byproducts of edible vegetable oils, such as soybean, sunflower, rapeseed, or corn oil. This ingredient appears frequently in packaged foods that contain fats, including margarines, salad dressings, baked goods, breakfast cereals, and snack foods.
This ingredient is vegan because its commercial source is entirely plant-based. Tocopherol-rich extracts are isolated directly from the natural distillates of vegetable seed oils through physical separation and molecular distillation. Animal products are not used as raw materials or as processing aids at any stage of the manufacturing process. Because animal fats do not contain the necessary concentrations of mixed tocopherols to serve as a commercial source, E307b is consistently derived from plants and is suitable for vegans.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
