Is e410 vegan?

E410 is the European food additive code for locust bean gum, also commonly known as carob gum. It is a natural thickening and gelling agent extracted from the seeds of the carob tree, an evergreen plant native to the Mediterranean basin. To produce the additive, the seeds are removed from the carob pods, stripped of their outer skins through thermal or chemical treatment, split to separate the germ from the endosperm, and then milled into a fine, soluble powder.

Food manufacturers frequently list E410 in products such as ice creams, plant-based dairy substitutes, salad dressings, sauces, fruit preparations, and baked goods, where it stabilizes texture and prevents moisture separation.

E410 is vegan because it is entirely of botanical origin. The commercial production process relies exclusively on plant seeds, mechanical milling, and standard chemical separation techniques, with no animal tissues, animal byproducts, or animal-derived processing aids involved at any stage of manufacturing.
