So, what is e951?

E951 is the European food additive code for aspartame, an artificial, non-saccharide sweetener used as a sugar substitute. It is manufactured synthetically by chemically combining two amino acids, L-aspartic acid and L-phenylalanine, with a small amount of methanol. These amino acids are produced industrially either through direct chemical synthesis or through bacterial fermentation using plant-based and mineral nutrients.

Manufacturers use this additive extensively in low-calorie and sugar-free items to impart intense sweetness without added sugar. E951 commonly appears on ingredient labels for diet soft drinks, sugar-free chewing gum, powdered beverage mixes, gelatin-style desserts, breath mints, and tabletop sweetener packets.

E951 is vegan because its production relies exclusively on synthetic and microbial processes. Neither the chemical building blocks nor the industrial fermentation methods involve animal sources, animal by-products, or animal-derived processing aids at any stage of manufacturing.
