So, what is sucralose e955?
Sucralose, designated by the European food additive code E955, is an artificial, non-caloric sweetener. It is synthesized through a multi-step chemical process that modifies sucrose, standard table sugar typically sourced from sugar cane or sugar beets. During this synthesis, three hydroxyl groups on the sucrose molecule are selectively substituted with chlorine atoms. Sucralose is commonly found in diet beverages, tabletop sweetener packets, chewing gum, low-calorie baked goods, prepared desserts, and flavored protein powders.
sucralose E955 is vegan because it is produced exclusively from plant and synthetic materials without any animal sources. The primary starting material is plant-derived sugar, and the chemical reagents used to achieve chlorination are non-animal mineral compounds. Furthermore, modern commercial manufacturing does not utilize animal tissues, animal-derived processing aids, or animal enzymes at any stage of production. Because it contains no animal products and requires none for its synthesis, sucralose meets the requirements of a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
