So, what is camellia sinensis leaf?
Camellia sinensis leaf is the Latin botanical name for the leaf of the tea plant, the species used to produce green, black, white, and oolong teas. The leaves are harvested from an evergreen shrub native to East Asia and grown globally in subtropical and tropical climates. Depending on the intended final product, the harvested leaves are processed through standard physical steps such as withering, steaming, rolling, oxidizing, and drying. This ingredient frequently appears in packaged iced teas, kombucha, energy drinks, confectionery, baked goods, flavoring extracts, and nutritional supplements.
This ingredient is classified as vegan because it is entirely of plant origin and involves no animal sources. The cultivation, harvesting, and standard thermal or mechanical drying processes for tea leaves do not require animal-derived substances or animal processing aids. As a purely botanical component, camellia sinensis leaf is suitable for vegan consumers.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
