So, what is e160aii?
E160aii is the E-number for plant carotenes, a group of naturally occurring orange-yellow food coloring pigments. It is produced by extracting carotenoids, primarily beta-carotene, from edible plants or algae. Common raw sources include carrots, red palm fruit, grass, and the microalgae Dunaliella salina. The pigment is typically isolated using food-grade solvents, vegetable oils, or supercritical carbon dioxide. Manufacturers widely add E160aii to foods such as margarine, plant-based spreads, baked goods, confectionery, pasta, and beverages to restore or enhance yellow and orange tones.
E160aii is vegan because it is derived entirely from plant or algal matter and does not involve animal sources. Unlike certain additives that can be synthesized from animal fats or tissues, plant carotenes are defined by regulatory standards as originating strictly from botanical and algal sources. Consequently, food products listing E160aii contain no animal-derived ingredients from this additive.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
