E242 is the E-number for dimethyl dicarbonate, a synthetic chemical compound used as a beverage preservative and cold sterilization agent. It is manufactured industrially through chemical synthesis, typically by reacting methyl chloroformate with sodium hydroxide. Once added to a liquid, the substance rapidly hydrolyzes and breaks down completely into carbon dioxide and tiny amounts of methanol, leaving virtually no active compound behind.

Food and beverage producers typically use E242 in products such as carbonated soft drinks, ready-to-drink iced teas, flavored waters, fruit juices, ciders, and wines. It serves to inhibit microbial spoilage by neutralizing yeasts, molds, and bacteria that could otherwise ferment or spoil the beverage after bottling.
