So, what is e262i?
The code E262i refers to sodium acetate, the sodium salt of acetic acid. It is commercially produced by neutralizing acetic acid with an alkaline sodium compound, such as sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, or sodium hydroxide. The acetic acid used in this reaction is generally obtained through the bacterial fermentation of plant sugars or via synthetic petrochemical synthesis. The sodium compounds are sourced from mineral deposits or chemical manufacturing.
Food processors utilize E262i primarily as an acidity regulator, preservative, and flavoring agent. It commonly appears in packaged snacks, especially salt and vinegar flavored chips, as well as in processed grain products, condiments, sauces, and ready meals. E262i is vegan because all components involved in its creation are of mineral, microbial, plant, or synthetic origin. Animal tissues, secretions, and animal-derived processing aids play no role in the commercial synthesis of this additive.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
