So, what is e571?
The label code E571 is not an officially recognized food additive number and most commonly appears as a typographical or optical scanning error for E471 (mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids) or E570 (fatty acids). These additives function primarily as emulsifiers and stabilizers in processed foods such as packaged breads, margarines, frozen desserts, and confectionery.
These fatty acid compounds are manufactured through the chemical reaction of glycerol with commercial fats. The starting fats can originate from plant sources, such as palm oil, soybean oil, and sunflower oil, or from animal sources, such as tallow and lard derived from cattle or pigs.
The verdict is possibly vegan because food labels usually do not identify whether the underlying fats are derived from plants or animals. Unless a product carries a recognized vegan certification, consumers must contact the manufacturer directly to confirm the source of the ingredient.
