E160e is the European food additive code for beta-apo-8'-carotenal, an orange to red-orange food coloring belonging to the carotenoid family. While this pigment occurs naturally in various plants such as spinach, citrus peel, and marigolds, the additive used in industry is almost exclusively produced through chemical synthesis. Commercial synthesis utilizes synthetic or plant-derived chemical building blocks to create a stable, identical version of the natural compound.
Manufacturers add E160e to food to restore or enhance color. It frequently appears in products such as margarine, vegetable fats, baked goods, confectionery, salad dressings, sauces, and dairy alternatives.
E160e is vegan because it is produced without any animal-derived raw materials or processing aids. Its origin is strictly synthetic and plant- or petrochemical-based, making it entirely free from animal products.
